What is Homeostasis?

To remain healthy, our bodies must be regulated in a consistent state of internal balance, under ever changing external conditions.  “Homeostasis”  is the term used to describe the state of balance and the process to maintain balance within the body.  This is the state of a co-ordinated internal mechanism and system which maintains the normal functions of the body until, one or more of the systems become out of balance.

There are several thousand-control systems in your body.  The most vital regulator through the body is the nervous systems and the endocrine system.  They are closely inter-related and each is necessary for the function of the other.

When a system within our body becomes out of balance, all the cells of the body are impacted, in the same manner a pebble is dropped into a pond, the rippled effect spreads and impact other systems within the body.    The imbalance can, based on severity of imbalance, create disease or ill health as a result in the physical body.   Any imbalance, occurs first in our energy system which can take up to two years to manifest into the physical body.  Recognising and being aware of your stressors, environment and external events that create stress, is critical to maintaining Homeostasis.

However, life is not perfect and we are always exposed to events that impact of energy, mental, emotional and physical states.   So how you do manage and respond to these external events that impact negatively on our homeostasis?

So how do we maintain Homeostasis?  Your peripheral nervous system acts to relays  the sensory and motor messages are activated from between the central nervous system, body’s muscles, glands and sense organs.

Using resources, such as herbs, meditation, yoga and any modality to support balancing your nervous and endocrine systems to rebalance your systems.

5 steps to rebalance and get back to a homeostasis state.

  1. Breathe.  Breathing is the essence of life.  Learning to breath deeply in both the belly and the chest – using the capacity of your lungs is vital.  When under stress, you begin to hyperventilate, shortening breath and intake.  Learn to breathe deeply.
  2. Self-care first aid kit: Use herbs that signals your nervous system to relax and remain calm, signalling to the different internal systems using your sensory experience.  Breathing in aromatic and medicinal herbs can support your system to relax.  Essential oils that are infused with herbs specifically designed for stress, check out www.herbalhealing.kiwi for the Calm range of products [specifically formulated for stress and anxiety relief].
  3. Walk – get into nature, or walk along the sea.  These are natural sensory activating relaxants.  If you prefer the woods, walk in nature.  Its such a wonderful experience to ground yourself and connect with mother earth.  The sea provides a sense of calm for your emotional state.
  4. Yoga.  A perfect weekly activity and habit to assist with stress release and rebalancing your system.
  5. Love:  find a hobby, passion, that relaxes you at any time of the day.  Hug someone, cry openly in the shower, let the stress out. Allow yourself to be vulnerable and release the stress within the emotional body.  You’ll be amazed at how effective this technique can be to helping releasing stress, revitalising energy and rebalancing your internal systems. \
